Originally Biarritz was just a small fishing port.

Then in 1854 the Emperor Napoleon III of France and his wife the Empress Eugenie took up residence in Biarritz.

Soon after, all the crowned heads of Europe made it their fashionable address. Biarritz was known as the Queen of Beaches and the Beaches of Kings.

The Kings and Queens of England, Wurtemberg, Belgium, Portugal, Russia, Poland, Roumania, Spain all left a legacy, making Biarritz what it is today.

Edward VII of England, following in the footstes of his mother Queen Victoria, established a horse racing course and the first golf course in 1888 which is still in use and one of the finest in Europe - only 200 metres from the Residence Regina (as seen below).

Subequently the aristocracy and crowned heads were replaced by international movies stars, singers, artitsts.

Charlie Chaplin, Rita Hayworth, the Aga Khan, Frank Sinatra, Gary Cooper, Bing Crosby, Jayne Mansfield, Omar Sharif, Brigitte Bardot, Princess Margaret and the list goes on.

Todays visitors include the International jet set who don’t want the heat or bustle of the Riviera, but seek a more refined, discreet and stylish charm.
